Is curcumin purity important?

Here’s another great question:

How important is it for the curcumin in my supplement to be pure?

So let’s take this question apart a bit and address it.

English: Curcumin Polski: Kurkumina

Purity is important, but there is more to it than that.

First, all dietary supplements should be as pure and as a high a quality as possible. That’s a given.

It’s also why we recommend sticking with good brands, like Douglas Labs (our personal favorite). They go through great lengths to make sure all of their supplements are pure, of high quality, and manufactured under strict controls.

They may cost a little more, but they’re worth it.

It’s troubling when we see people buying bottles of 1000 fish oil capsules in those big box stores. Those box stores can’t afford to sell many products at a high price. So they sacrifice quality in exchange for offering us low prices.

So we can’t expect those mega bottles of supplements to have the quality and purity that we want or need.

The analogy we like to use is that of coffee. Buy a 10 pound bag of generic coffee and see if it tastes as good as a small bag from a top national brand, or even your local roaster. It won’t!

As for curcumin, yes, purity is important.

But there is something that’s just as important as purity…

You see, curcumin is a difficult substance to get into our systems.

For example, if you take pure curcumin and stuff it into a simple capsule, with nothing else, then only a small percentage of that curcumin will actually get absorbed. The rest will be excreted in our stool….which is useless!

Good curcumin supplements, like our Longvida, have extra ingredients necessary to dissolve curcumin, so that more curcumin gets into our circulation.

More curcumin in our circulation equals a better chance of it actually working to reduce inflammation and pain.

This is also why sprinkling a little curcumin into our food or as a tea won’t bring much benefit.

So is curcumin purity important?

Sure.

But there’s more to it than that!

Important to Use Quality Fish Oil Supplements

Couldn’t have said it better myself:

Thank you, ConsumerLab.com

However, due to their better absorption, it may be fair to pay some premium for fish oil in the natural or re-esterified triglyceride forms. If you choose to use either of these two forms, look for products which list EPA and DHA and “triglycerides.” An example in this Review is Douglas Labs Quell Fish Oil, which lists that it is a “Supercritical CO2 triglyceride concentrate.”

Be aware that some products wich “natural” in the name don’t seem to provide truly natural fish oil, but may start with natural fish oil which is then chemically treated…

Can Fish Oil Enhance Memory?

An interesting study was recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

A typical fish oil softgel

Can this help improve your memory?

In this study, 176 healthy adults were given DHA or a placebo over 6 months, and were subjected to various memory and reaction time tests.

Their basic conclusion was that High DHA fish oil improved both memory and reaction time. However, there were differences in how men responded to the fish oil versus women.

Specifically, women had a better improvement in memory, while men had a better improvement in reaction times.

The 6 month time period is interesting because, as the researchers point out, DHA requires about 6 months for it to reach a plateau levels in our tissues.

This is why you cannot take a fish oil supplement and expect sudden, magical results in a short period of time. Fish oil supplements should be taken daily for at least 6 months, if not longer, before deciding to continue or not.

We should note that the dose used in this study was 1,160 mg DHA per day. Using our product, you would need to take two of our capsules per day.

What isn’t clear is how pure the DHA was in the product the researchers used.

Regardless, what is clear is that if you already have a low-DHA diet (i.e., from a lack of fish in your diet), then a quality fish oil supplement can provide visible health benefits.
