Wobenzym PS: Why should you consider this for your arthritis and chronic pain?
For decades, doctors in Europe have recommended enzymes as an option for the treatment of various forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. We’ve looked at the literature, and are astounded at how well these enzymes work!
This is why we recently added Wobenzym PS to our family of products.
What is Wobenzym PS?
Wobenzym PS is a blend of three enzymes specifically designed for the support, maintenance, and structure of joints, muscles, and tendons. Wobenzym PS also works by promoting and supporting a healthy, balanced immune system, which is critical for rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions.
Wobenzym is a simple formula, with three active ingredients:
Bromelain – Extracted from pineapple, bromelain is a powerful anti-inflammatory enzyme. It also aids in digestion. It is found
Rutoside trihydrate (Rutin) – Rutin is a substance found in buckwheat, asparagus, and citrus fruit rinds. Rutin has various positive health effects, especially as an antioxidant and as an anti-inflammatory agent.
Trypsin – Trypsin is a very common enzyme produced by the pancreas. When trypsin is released from the pancreas, it helps in digestion. However, in Wobenzym PS, the trypsin has anti-inflammatory properties.
How does Wobenzym PS work?
Based on our review of the literature, there are two possible ways in which we believe Wobenzym PS exerts its effects on inflammation:
Intestinal effects – Wobenzym PS tablets are enteric coated, meaning that this special coating protects the enzymes from stomach acids. The enzymes are then able to enter into the intestines intact. Once there, these enzymes are able to break down some of the bacteria that we all normally have in our intestines. The breakdown of these bacteria then “energizes” the immune system into action. There are a few papers in the literature supporting this hypothesis, but more work is clearly needed.
Systemic effects – Thanks to the special tablet coating, the three ingredients in Wobenzym PS are able to enter into the circulation. Once there, these enzymes help restore the balance to an immune system that is already active in response to diseases like arthritis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
Does Wobenzym PS actually work?
Wobenzym PS descends from an older, European product called Phlogenzym, which is still quite commonly used in Germany and other European countries. Over the years, there have been many studies looking at enzymes therapy for various diseases. For example, a study out of Germany found that Phlogenzym worked just as well as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac for pain associated with osteoarthritis of the hip. The authors concluded:
“In this study, there was no real difference between Phlogenzym and diclofenac 100 milligrams/day, implying an equal benefit-risk relation between the two…Phlogenzym may well be recommended for the treatment of patients with osteoarthritis of the hip with signs of inflammation as indicated by a high pain level.”
Ask anyone who has taken powerful drugs like diclofenac, and they will tell you about some of the potential side effects. They’re not nice at all! Interestingly, the dose in Wobenzym PS is higher than the original Phlogenzym formula, suggesting that Wobenzym PS may work better for some folks compared to the older Phlogenym formula.
Does Wobenzym PS have side effects?
Some people may experience small digestive disruptions, such as diarrhea and excess gas, especially when taking enzymes for the first time or in large doses. These effects can be minimized by taking smaller doses more frequently throughout the day.
Warning: If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, suffering from bleeding disorders or liver damage, or if you are taking anticoagulant drugs like warfarin, please consult with a healthcare professional before using this product.
Are there other concerns?
We advise NOT taking Wobenzym PS with milk or any hot drink, as the milk or hot drink may compromise the enteric coating.
We would also advise trying Wobenzym PS for 3-6 weeks before deciding whether or not it is helping your particular condition.
So, if you have concerns about arthritis or other chronic inflammatory condition, do consider Wobenzym PS!
