A water pillow is a water pillow, right?

Well, not exactly.

There are basically two kinds of water pillow, and the difference can be quite significant.

Why a water pillow?

In a word…comfort.

The brilliance behind a water pillow is that it is fully adjustable. Too soft? Add more water. Too firm? Empty a bit of water out.

Simple. But brilliant.

So if you’re looking for a comfortable pillow, and you do not have a need for special neck support, then a standard water pillow, like our Chiroflow Waterbase Pillow, will serve just fine.

But, what if you want a water pillow and also need neck support or cervical support?

That’s a slightly different story.

You then need a water pillow that also has built-in cervical neck support.

Fortunately, such a pillow exists in the Core Deluxe Water Neck Pillow. This pillow has cervical support, plus the bladder to be filled with water.

What are some other reasons to buy a water pillow?

The water pillow conforms to the back of your head and neck, no matter if you’re sleeping on your back or side. This is what makes it so comfortable to begin with.

However, there is another subtle reason why water pillows are so comfortable. Basically, once you lie down with your head on the pillow, the water comes to a new temperature, distributing that heat across the entire pillow.

So you now have a pillow that stays at a reasonable constant temperature across the whole surface. So as you move during sleep, your sleep is not disturbed by exposing your head to a cold area on the pillow.

It may not sound like much, but rolling onto a cold spot on your pillow can disturb your sleep rhythm.

So a water pillow does away with that by maintaining a steady temperature across the entire surface of the pillow.

Will a water pillow help with neck pain?

This is a difficult one to answer, since it depends largely on the source/cause of the pain, age, weight, and other factors.

But generally speaking, a water pillow is not the best kind of pillow for neck pain. Neck pain tends to respond better to foam pillows that are designed to hold the head and neck in the proper, neutral position. The Tri Core pillow is a perfect example of this.
